After taking nine penalties in an exhibition bout against Finland Tuesday night, many are calling for Canada to dial down their physicality in an attempt to be more disciplined.
That’s not what needs to happen.
Instead, Canada needs to dial it in.
Aside from Nazem Kadri’s hit on Mikael Granlund just nine seconds into the game, none of Canada’s remaining eight penalties had anything to do with being physical. That is, if you look past Patrice Cormier’s elbow on Teemu Hartikainen, which lends itself to a simple shake of the head. (more…)
Apparently Canada captain Patrice Cormier is a fan of the rapper ‘Ludacris’.
How else can you explain the way the Rimouski Oceanic standout has been ‘throwin’ ‘bows’ left, right and centre in exhibition play as Canada gears up for its opening game at the World Junior Championship against Latvia on Boxing Day.
His actions are also just that. Ludicrous. (more…)

Though his team is undefeated in exhibition play leading up to the World Junior Championship, Canada head coach Willie Desjardins isn’t satisfied with his team’s play just three days before the tournament gets underway.
After a 3-0 win against Finland in Calgary Tuesday night that saw Canada shorthanded a total of nine times, Desjardins is well aware his club has a lot to work on to be ready for the tournament opener against Latvia on Boxing Day. (more…)
From Ken Wiebe of QMI Agency:
Quinton Howden might be a teenager, but he still realizes the significance of Bobby Orr and Don Cherry.
In a few weeks, the Oakbank product and Moose Jaw Warriors forward will have the opportunity to rub shoulders with both after he was among the three Manitobans selected to play in the annual CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, which goes Jan. 20 in Windsor, Ont.
“It’ll be a great experience, those are two legends. To get the chance to meet (Orr and Cherry) will be a great honour,” said Howden, who is back in Manitoba for the Christmas break and will play for Team Orr next month.
“It’s very exciting. There are so many good guys who get to play in this game and so many young prospects that are eligible this year. (more…)
Canada’s captain will play on.
Returning forward Patrice Cormier will not face suspension from the IIHF after an errant elbow was thrown – and landed – on Swedish forward Anton Rodin in an exhibition match in Regina Sunday.
Cormier raised his elbow as Rodin cut in front of the Canadian forward. Rodin didn’t have the puck at the time. (more…)

From Dan Rosen of NHL.com:
It wasn’t as if some light bulb in Matt Duchene’s head turned on, nor did he have one of those, “Ah, now I get it” moments.
Colorado’s stud rookie concedes that the NHL game has started to slow down for him in the last month, but really, Duchene truly believes that the only reason he’s contributing offensively now is because he’s finally making the most of his chances.
Duchene, the third pick in June’s Entry Draft, heads into Monday’s game at Minnesota having produced 15 points in his last 16 games, including 7 goals and 8 assists, after scoring only twice and dishing out just five assists in his first 21 games.
“There are times that people go through where you’re in a bit of a slump and things just aren’t going in and things just aren’t going right,” Duchene told NHL.com. “It comes in time and you have to keep at it and keep working and eventually the breaks will come.” (more…)
