From Aaron Vickers:

Director of Central Scouting Edward John (E.J.) McGuire passed on at the age of 58 Thursday in Toronto.

McGuire suffered from leiomyoscarcoma, a rare form of cancer that aggressively attacks the body’s cells that make up the involuntary muscles within the body. He is survived by his wife, Terry, and their daughters Jacqueline and Erin.

McGuire touched every person he came across. His passing is a true loss for hockey.

His death comes just four days after Yale forward Mandi Schwartz’s lost her battle with leukemia.

Schwartz, the sister of Colorado College forwards Rylan and Jaden (drafted in the first round by the St. Louis Blues), had a much publicized two-year battle with the disease.

Schwartz was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, an aggressive cancer of the bone marrow and blood, in 2008. Chemotherapy sent the disease into remission, but she suffered a relapse in 2009 that required a stem cell transplant. After donors were found, Schwartz underwent a transplant. Unfortunately the cancer again returned months later, with the leukemia settling in her bones.

Mandi is survived by her brothers, mother Carol, father Rick and fiancee Kaylem Prefontaine.

Future Considerations would like to extend its condolences to both the McGuire and Schwartz families.
