Biggs shows little at U18

From Aaron Vickers:

For as large a tournament as some of his teammates had, one would figure his name alone would put him in the category of having a successful event.

But Tyler Biggs was anything but at the World Under-18 Championship in Germany.

And while Biggs did score an important overtime goal against Canada in the semifinal, it was a case of too-little, too-late by the time the gold medal was hanging from his neck.

While he was all over each and every scoresheet as the tournament wore on, Biggs had just three points – two goals and an assist – in six games. Where he did dominate, though, was on trips to the penalty box. The Cincinnati, OH. native recorded an impressive 49 minutes in penalties, including seven minor penalties, one five minute major, one 10 minute misconduct and a game.

“(He was) invisible for the majority of the tournament except for taking the odd bad penalty for being overly aggressive,” Future Considerations’ chief scout Dan Stewart said.

But it wasn’t just his temperament and pension for ill-advised penalties that left scouts scratching their heads. Surrounded by a plethora of talent to compare him to, Biggs failed to show why he should be mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Rocco Grimaldi, TJ Miller and Reid Boucher.

“His inability to keep up with some of the ultra skilled prospects in his age group was enough to leave some unanswered questions in the minds of scouts and could have a disastrous affect on his draft position,” Stewart said. “Most are starting to see a physical third liner with limited offensive upside instead of the big, nasty, scoring contributor he was though to project as.”

Currently ranked 16th overall in Future Considerations’ April ranking, only time will tell if his Under-18 performance will have him going after 30 at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
