Beaulieu eyes challenges ahead

Shortly after the Montreal Canadiens selected Nathan Beaulieu, the defenceman promised fans he had plans to learn to speak French as soon as possible.

If Beaulieu can live up to his potential on the blue line, speaking French will be the least of concerns for Habs fans.

Although the St. John Sea Dogs’ defenseman was ranked ninth in Future Considerations’ final draft rankings, Beaulieu fell to the Canadiens at 17th overall and arguably was one of the steals of this year’s first round. Despite the wait, Beaulieu exclaimed that the elation in being selected by Montreal was a family affair.

“Growing up a French Canadian, [my father] is very excited, but not as much as me though,” Beaulieu said. “I’m very happy with where I ended up and I can’t say enough good things about this great organization.” Continue reading



Miller time for Whalers

JT Miller is bound for Plymouth.

New York Rangers first round pick has reneged on his commitment to the University of North Dakota, instead opting to take his game to the Ontario Hockey League.

The Whalers hold Miller’s rights, who was selected 15th overall in June’s NHL Entry Draft. Whalers’ Stefan Noesen (Ottawa, 21) and Rickard Rickell (Anaheim, 30) were also drafted in the first round this year. Continue reading



MacKinnon a Moosehead

Nathan MacKinnon is now a Moosehead.

The Cole Harbour, NS. native was dealt to Halifax by the Baie-Comeau Drakkar in exchange for players Carl Gélinas and Francis Turbide as well as Halifax’s 2012 and 2013 first round picks.

The Drakkar also received Quebec Remparts’ first selection in 2013 as part of the deal. Continue reading
