Jamie Oleksiak is bound for Saginaw.

The 2011 first round pick of the Dallas Stars has decided to leave Northeastern University in favour of the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League.

“Northeastern has been phenomenal for me and has really helped in my development, but as for what’s happening next year, it’s all up in the air,” Oleksiak told the Stars’ website at the draft. “My goal is to play professional hockey one day, and I really want to go where it’s going to continue my development and get to my goal and help me achieve the most.”

The move may have been motivated by a head coaching change at the University. Former head coach Greg Cronin left the school in order to take an assistant coaching position with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was replaced by

Oleksiak had 13 points and 57 penalty minutes in 38 games at Northeastern last season. At six-foot-seven and 240-pounds, the 14th overall pick was the largest player selected at last month’s draft.

Saginaw originally selected Oleksiak 138th overall in the 2008 OHL Priority Draft.

The decision is the second time in as many weeks that Oleksiak has made headlines. Possessing dual citizenship, Oleksiak announced he would compete for a roster spot on Canada’s 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship squad. He had previously been invited to Team USA’s summer camp.
