From Aaron Vickers:

Victor Rask has touched down in Calgary.

The Swede, selected third overall in the CHL Import Draft in July, has shown up for training camp with the Calgary Hitmen.

Rask, the 42nd pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, was rumoured to be joining the Calgary Hitmen after Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford told the Raleigh News-Observer he wanted to see Rask rack up big minutes in North America.

“Our understanding is he will play in North America and that he wants to,” Rutherford said. “It’s very important to get him to a place where he plays a lot of minutes. We’d like to see him somewhere playing more than 20 minutes a game.”

Rask will have no problem accumulating big minutes in Calgary. The Hitmen were last in the WHL last season, finishing with a league-worst 171 goals.

The six-foot, 190-pound forward has shown up ready to play. Rask finished among team leaders in the beep test at Calgary’s fitness testing Sunday night.

There is still a chance Rask doesn’t play with the Hitmen this season, though. The native of Leksand can still make the Hurricanes out of camp or be assigned to the Charlotte Checkers, Carolina’s American Hockey League affiliate.
