From Aaron Vickers, Future Considerations:

The Russians are coming.

And with a little help, they could cause a handful headaches for the Canadian Hockey League.

With the Subway Super Series set to get underway in under two weeks time, the Russians unveiled their roster for the event (To view Team QMJHL Rosters, click HERE. To view Team OHL Rosters, click HERE. To view Team WHL Rosters, click HERE).

Typically the Russians will add native players from whichever league they are facing. Last year for example, Belleville Bulls sniper and current Atlanta Thrashers forward Alexander Burmistrov suited up for Russia in their series against the OHL, or Calgary Hitmen import Misha Fisenko alongside his fellow Russians against the WHL. From Aaron Vickers, Future Considerations:

If you’re under 20, drafted out of the CHL and currently playing in the NHL, you’re about to have some sleepless nights.

We’re looking at you Brayden, Nino, Cam, Alexander and Jeff. You too Taylor and Tyler.

The NHL season is nearly an eighth over, and Schenn, Niederreiter, Fowler, Burmistrov, Skinner, Hall and Seguin are all aware of what looms over them. Continue reading

From Aaron Vickers, Future Considerations:

A prolonged absence from New York Islanders prospect and current Moncton Wildcat forward Kirill Kabanov has fueled speculation that the enigmatic hockey star isn’t returning to North America.

Kabanov left for Russia over a week ago to attend to a personal emergency, speculated as a death in the family. He’s yet to come back to the club and the Wildcats have indicated there is no timetable for his return to Moncton.

He was initially expected to return to the team last week.

In two games this season, Kabanov is pointless with six penalty minutes. He notched 10 goals and 23 points in his highly publicized season with the Wildcats last year. Continue reading

Do The Isles Need Nino Niederreiter in New York?

From Aaron Vickers, Future Considerations:

Half a dozen games into the Nino Niederreiter experiment in Long Island has yielded little personal success for the highest drafted Swiss-born player of all-time.

One point in just over an hours work in six games has many wondering if keeping Niederreiter in New York is a justified move by general manager Garth Snow. Continue reading

Kabanov’s Late Excuses

From Aaron Vickers, Future Considerations:

It’s not a ‘stop-the-presses’ moment, but the fact that New York Islanders prospect Kirill Kabanov was late for a second time to practice is certainly lending to an already negative stereotype of the young Russian.

His ‘my game, my rules’, ‘you don’t know me, I’ll do what I want‘  attitude that significantly hindered him in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft has hockey people and internet boards buzzing about the significant attitude adjustment that needs to take place in order for Kabanov to become a successful hockey player. More Than A New York Minute for Niederreiter

From Aaron Vickers, Future Considerations:

Nino Niederreiter may be donning the Islanders jersey for longer than a New York minute.

Originally reported by Dean Millard and Guy Flaming of The Pipeline Show, there is growing momentum for the idea that the Portland Winterhawks standout will not be returned to his WHL club. Continue reading

From Aaron Vickers, Future Considerations:

As initially reported by Newsday’s Katie Strang via Twitter, often criticized prospect Kirill Kabanov has been reprimanded by the New York Islanders for showing up late to the club’s first day of rookie camp.

Kabanov showed up 15 minutes late for team physicals, prompting his dismissal from the Islanders’ opening day. Continue reading
