The Buffalo Sabres have selected Joel Armia with the 15th overall selection in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

A goal scorer with enviable size and mobility, the six-foot-three, 190-pound Armia has already shown an effectiveness playing against men in the SM-Liiga. The Assat winger notched 18 goals and 29 points in 48 games playing against opposition 10+ years his elder. Continue reading



Adam named AHL’s top rookie

Another year, another Portland Pirate is the AHL’s top rookie.

In what is becoming a minor league tradition, Buffalo Sabres prospect Luke Adam has been named the recipient of Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award as the league’s best first-year player.

Adam’s win marks the third consecutive year a Portland Pirate has claimed the award. Tyler Ennis captured the award last year while Nathan Gerbe received the honour in 2008/09. Current Tampa Bay Lightning forward Teddy Purcell was the last non-Pirate to capture the award as a Los Angeles Kings prospect, doing so with the Manchester Monarchs. Continue reading

Zack Kassian’s run-in with the law has — at least temporarily — derailed his chances of getting a contract with the Buffalo Sabres.

General Manager Darcy Regier said Tuesday he has stopped negotiations with the 2009 first- round draft pick, who was charged with assault last week following an early morning bar fight in Windsor, Ont. Continue reading
