From Aaron Vickers:

The Portland Winterhawks had to cancel an exhibition game due to a lack of personnel this preseason.

The team was forced to cancel a September 16th game against the Seattle Thunderbirds after injuries struck the club which had seen 15 players sent to NHL camps.

At best, the team should expect 14 back.

That’s because the Columbus Blue Jackets seem keen on keeping Winterhawks standout Ryan Johansen, who according to Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Scott Arniel, doesn’t have to play on the top two lines in order to make the team as a 19-year-old.

“(Johansen) doesn’t have to be one of our top two centers if he does make our hockey club,” Arniel told NHL.com. “He’s a talented kid who can play in a lot of situations.” Continue reading

While a dozen draft eligible defensemen were battling for seven roster spots on Canada’s entry in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, two were focused elsewhere.

A couple of the hardest fallers this season are Kelowna’s Shane McColgan in the WHL and Omaha Lancers power forward Seth Ambroz in the United States Hockey League. Continue reading

From Aaron Vickers, Future Considerations:

It’s nearly 3000 miles from Long Island to Portland.

But ‘El Nino’ has finally headed west.

To the Western Hockey League, that is.

After a nine game stint with the New York Islanders, Nino Niederreiter was returned to the Portland Winterhawks, bolstering the roster of a team that is already ranked third in the nation with a 12-2-0-1 record. Continue reading

From Aaron Vickers, Future Considerations:

Half a dozen games into the Nino Niederreiter experiment in Long Island has yielded little personal success for the highest drafted Swiss-born player of all-time.

One point in just over an hours work in six games has many wondering if keeping Niederreiter in New York is a justified move by general manager Garth Snow. Continue reading
