If @SeriousFan09 is able to predict the future, the 2011 NHL Entry Draft will set a post-lockout draft record. Whether or not he will be correct with his prediction of 11 European born players taken in Friday’s first round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft is debatable, the European born talent in this year’s crop is not.

Nail Yakupov was awarded the Emms Family Award as the OHL’s top rookie Wednesday, capping off an impressive debut season in which the Sarnia Sting standout recorded 49 goals and 101 points in 65 games this season and be named the league’s rookie of the month on three separate occasions.

Finishing fifth in league scoring and first among rookies, Yakupov becomes just the fifth OHL rookie to break the 100-point plateau, joining David Legwand, Sheldon Keefe and then teammates Patrick Kane and Sam Gagner.

“I am honoured to be named Rookie of the Year in the Ontario Hockey League,” Yakupov told the OHL.  Continue reading

With Taylor vs. Tyler discussed – ad nauseam, and finally settled; and the summer gone and the new season in full swing, we can again turn focus to the next crop of talented future NHLers as they look to impress scouts and NHL executives in countless hockey arenas around the globe.

The 2011 NHL Entry Draft was initially labeled a weak draft as recently as two years ago, fueled by a perceived lack of talent entering the Canadian Hockey League. It isn’t the case two years later, though, as less than spectacular midget aged prospects are rounding into form and correcting some weaknesses heading into their draft years. Continue reading



FC releases preliminary list for 2011 NHL Entry Draft

With the QMJHL season already underway and the rest of the hockey world ready to follow suit, the Taylor vs. Tyler debate of yesteryear has been put on the back burner as their careers continue to play out.

Hall and Seguin can now give way this year’s three-way dance involving Dummondville’s Sean Couturier, Swede Adam Larsson and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of the Red Deer Rebels.

Which will be called to the stage first on draft day? Can someone outside of the ‘big three’ make noise at the top of the list?
