MacKinnon delivers in ‘Q’ debut

It didn’t take long for Nathan MacKinnon to make an impact on the QMJHL.

In his first period of official action, the 16-year-old recorded an assist on teammate Luca Ciampini’s powerplay goal midway through the opening frame.

A period later MacKinnon had his second point, another assist on a Darcy Ashley goal. Continue reading



MacKinnon a Moosehead

Nathan MacKinnon is now a Moosehead.

The Cole Harbour, NS. native was dealt to Halifax by the Baie-Comeau Drakkar in exchange for players Carl Gélinas and Francis Turbide as well as Halifax’s 2012 and 2013 first round picks.

The Drakkar also received Quebec Remparts’ first selection in 2013 as part of the deal. Continue reading

Every year it seems like we hear about the next great hockey talent tearing it up in a rink somewhere around the world. Like clockwork, people start the hype machine rolling on some 13-year-old kid from B.C. or a 14-year-old mastering his craft in Michigan.

While some of these reports have their merit, and a gem—who ultimately goes on to become a future NHL superstar—is found, prospects often end up as just another good hockey player in a vast landscape of future NHL hopefuls. Continue reading



MacKinnon not expected at QMJHL draft

The QMJHL draft is Saturday.

But the league’s top prospect will not be in attendance.

Cole Harbour, NS. native Nathan MacKinnon, widely regarded as the best prospect out of Atlantic Canada since Sidney Crosby, will be a no-show.

The 15-year-old MacKinnon, who played at Shattock St Mary’s last year, is reportedly considering going the NCAA route. Playing in the QMJHL would make him ineligible to do so. Continue reading
