The clock struck midnight on Nino Niederreiter’s NHL season Thursday as the New York Islanders returned the promising Swiss prospect to the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL.

Niederreiter was returned by the Islanders after a nine game audition, recording one goal and one assist during that span. Had Niederreiter played a 10th game, the first year of his three year entry-level contract would kick in. Continue reading

According to a source of Dean Millard of The Pipeline Show, the New York Islanders are planning on keeping Nino Niederreiter for the 2010/11 season.

Niederreiter, the Islanders’ first round pick, fifth overall, had 36 goals and 60 points in 65 games with the Portland Winter Hawks last year and was named to the 2010 World Junior Championship All-Star Team after posting six goals and 10 assists in seven games. Continue reading
