From Aaron Vickers:

Home is where the heart is.

For Jamie Oleksiak, Canada is home.

The six-foot-seven, 240-pound defenseman with both Canadian and American citizenship made that clear when he announced his intentions to skate in Hockey Canada’s National Junior Team Summer Development Camp a week ago.

The Toronto, ON. native made headlines when it was rumoured he would accept an invitation from Hockey Canada, declining USA Hockey’s offer in the process.

While he didn’t take the decision lightly, Oleksiak explained why his heart was in representing Canada. Continue reading

From Aaron Vickers:

You wouldn’t know it to look at him, but there’s something distinctly different about defenseman Michael Matheson.

The Pointe-Claire, QC. native didn’t join the Shawinigan Cataractes, who selected him 27th overall in the 2010 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Entry Draft. In fact, the No. 1 ranked prospect heading into that draft fell for the same reason he didn’t report to Shawinigan. Continue reading

From Aaron Vickers:

College hockey has lost another player to the Canadian Hockey League.

Reid Boucher, who has another year of high school, has de-committed to the Michigan State Spartans in favour of the Ontario Hockey League. The leading goal scorer for the gold medal winning United States at the World Under-18 Championship is expected to join the Sarnia Sting.

The native of Grand Ledge, MI. was expected to head to the United States Hockey League before joining Michigan State in 2012/13. Continue reading

From Aaron Vickers:

For the second time in as many years, the University of Michigan has lost a premier netminder.

A season after losing Jack Campbell to the Windsor Spitfires, Michigan has lost Anaheim Ducks prospect John Gibson.

The six-foot-three, 205-pound goaltender selected 39th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft will join the Kitchener Rangers.

“John Gibson has decided not to attend the University of Michigan or to play college hockey,” Michigan head coach Red Berenson said in a school press release.

A member of the United States National Team Development Program, Gibson went 9-4-3 with a 2.38 goals against average and .926 save percentage in USHL action. Internationally, Gibson helped Team USA to gold at the 2011 World U-18 Championship, earning the directorate award as the tournament’s top goaltender. Continue reading

From Aaron Vickers:

Jamie Oleksiak is heading north.

According to Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News, the Dallas Stars first rounder with dual citizenship will be trying out for Canada’s entry at the 2012 World Junior Championship in Calgary and Edmonton.

The Toronto, ON. native was named to Team USA’s summer camp, but was noticeably absent on Canada’s list of invitees.

Oleksiak, whose father is American, has suited up for Team USA at the 2009 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. Because the event isn’t sanctioned by the IIHF, Oleksiak is an international free agent and can play for either nation.

Canada can only return one defenseman from their silver medal winning squad a year ago. Erik Gudbranson, who may suit up for the Florida Panthers this season, is eligible to return. Continue reading
