As expected, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins didn’t have to wait too long to hear his name called on draft day.

In fact, he didn’t have to wait at all. As expected, the Edmonton Oilers made Nugent-Hopkins the first pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

But he may have to wait a little longer than previous first overall picks to play in the NHL. Continue reading



Devils win lottery, Oilers pick first in 2011

The Edmonton Oilers lost all season.

And in a season of lows, the City of Champions got one very important high. The first overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

While New Jersey won the 2011 draft lottery, the Devils could only move up a maximum of four spots, leaving Edmonton with the first pick in the draft for the second consecutive year.  Continue reading



Sweden Paajarvi-less for Juniors

He’s the youngest player to ever represent Sweden at the World Junior Championship.

But he’s done it for the last time.

Edmonton Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini has told the Edmonton Journal that 19-year-old rookie Magnus Paajarvi will not be joining his home country in Buffalo at the 2011 tournament.

“I keep getting calls from them, asking about Paajarvi but he’s not going,” Tambellini told the paper. Continue reading
