From Aaron Vickers:

Tomas Jurco will get the opportunity to defend his Memorial Cup.

The Saint John Sea Dogs standout was returned to junior by the Detroit Red Wings Friday night.

Jurco, Detroit’s first pick, 35th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, had 31 goals and 56 points in 60 games with the Sea Dogs. In Saint John’s march to the QMJHL title, Jurco had six goals and 18 points. He added four goals and five points in helping the QMJHL club capture the Memorial Cup. Continue reading

From Aaron Vickers:

Call it just another day in the hockey career of Jonathan Huberdeau.

The Saint John Sea Dogs standout added third overall pick to his resume, one that boasts a QMJHL Playoffs MVP, Memorial Cup MVP and Memorial Cup Championship. Not a bad 10 months for the St. Jerome, PQ native.

“I can’t ask for anything more this season,” said the newest member of the Florida Panthers. ” I did everything on the ice I had to do for the Memorial Cup, so that was great, and I’m happy that Florida took me.”

The pick wasn’t at all a big surprise to Huberdeau, who expected to go among the first picks of the draft.

“Maybe I knew a little bit,” Huberdeau said. ” I was thinking I was third, so maybe I thought there is some chance that I’ll be picked there, but like you’re surprised to get picked there.  You don’t know what the team wants, but I’m very happy to be a Panther.” Continue reading

From Aaron Vickers:

With their second selection in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, the Minnesota Wild have selected Saint John Sea Dogs forward Zack Phillips 28th overall.

The pick was acquired in a deal that sent Wild defenseman Brent Burns to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Devin Setoguchi.

Phillips, who had 38 goals and 95 points in 67 games, possesses obvious offensive talent, both in his ability to control the puck with his quick hands and hard, accurate shot. Phillips also isn’t shy to take the puck to the net or get into the gritty areas to create offense either. Continue reading

From Aaron Vickers:

Jonathan Huberdeau put on an impressive first round performance in his series opener in the QMJHL playoffs.

And it’s making scouts feel better about the option of taking him among the first few picks in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

“His performance isn’t just solidifying him as a top-six (in the draft), but he’s now knocking on the top-four door,” an NHL Eastern Conference scout offered. Continue reading

2011 NHL Entry Draft at a glance

From Dan Stewart, Future Considerations

With Taylor vs. Tyler discussed – ad nauseam, and finally settled; and the summer gone and the new season in full swing, we can again turn focus to the next crop of talented future NHLers as they look to impress scouts and NHL executives in countless hockey arenas around the globe.

The 2011 NHL Entry Draft was initially labeled a weak draft as recently as two years ago, fueled by a perceived lack of talent entering the Canadian Hockey League. It isn’t the case two years later, though, as less than spectacular midget aged prospects are rounding into form and correcting some weaknesses heading into their draft years. Continue reading
