Last year saw Jack Campbell go 11th overall and Mark Visentin go 27th.

The 2009 draft saw no goaltenders selected while in 2008 Chet Pickard and Thomas McCollum went in the first round.

The trend continues of the alternating goaltender-less first round and goaltenders going in the first round in the ‘07 and ‘06 drafts as well. Continue reading

It’ll be a lonely June 24th for John Gibson if Twitter is right.

The Twitterverse overwhelmingly suggested that the US NTDP’s standout netminder shouldn’t be drafted among the top-30 in Minnesota, pushing the Pittsburgh, PA. native to day two of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Despite putting up a 2.38 goals against average and .926 save percentage in 17 USHL games and helping Team USA to a gold medal at the World Under-18 Championship in Germany, Gibson, the top-ranked goaltender by Future Considerations heading into the draft, should be avoided in the first round. From Aaron Vickers, Future Considerations:

In a difficult draft to project, Future Considerations excelled.

Future Considerations correctly identified 24 of the 30 first round picks in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, including projecting four players in their exact position, including Taylor Hall, Tyler Seguin, Derek Forbort and Austin Watson.

The draft was especially difficult to project given the depth of the draft. The draft was widely identified as one with interchangeable players between the 20th and 40th selections.

It went decidedly beyond that.

Joey Hishon (17th overall to Colorado), Kevin Hayes (24th to Chicago) and Mark Visentin (27th to Phoenix) were all considered off the board picks. Continue reading

2010 Draft: Storylines from Day 1

From Aaron Vickers, Future Considerations:

One day. One pick. One ending.

The Taylor vs. Tyler debate has come to a close – for now – as the Edmonton Oilers named Taylor Hall the first overall selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, leaving the Boston Bruins to scoop up Tyler Seguin. The debate, of course, will pick up as both enter the NHL as soon as next season. Continue reading
