From Dan Stewart:

A time honoured tradition that goes hand-in-hand with the NHL Entry Draft is the mock.

While draft rankings are a good way for fans to determine the skill level a specific draft crop has, a draft never goes down like the rankings predict because of variables such as specific team needs, a difference of opinion on a prospects potential and an organization’s draft tendencies which they give significant weight to in making their lists. Top prospects tumbling in 2011 draft rankings

From Dan Stewart:

With every draft year there are those who start strong only to drop down the rankings throughout the year for one reason or another.

A couple of the hardest fallers this season are Kelowna’s Shane McColgan in the WHL and Omaha Lancers power forward Seth Ambroz in the United States Hockey League. Continue reading

From Dan Stewart:

A new season comes new surprises, especially in the world of hockey prospects.

Perhaps this is no more true than those eligible for the annual Entry Draft, chasing the dream of being selected by a National Hockey League team and starting to take the steps to playing professional hockey for a living.

Some players struggle under the pressure of their draft year. Then there’s these guys.

Niagara Ice Dogs forward Ryan Strome, forward Ty Rattie of the Portland Winterhawks, Assat forward Joel Armia and Kitchener Rangers defenseman Ryan Murphy are in the spotlight after jumping out to better than expected starts in each of their respective leagues. Continue reading

2011 NHL Entry Draft at a glance

From Dan Stewart, Future Considerations

With Taylor vs. Tyler discussed – ad nauseam, and finally settled; and the summer gone and the new season in full swing, we can again turn focus to the next crop of talented future NHLers as they look to impress scouts and NHL executives in countless hockey arenas around the globe.

The 2011 NHL Entry Draft was initially labeled a weak draft as recently as two years ago, fueled by a perceived lack of talent entering the Canadian Hockey League. It isn’t the case two years later, though, as less than spectacular midget aged prospects are rounding into form and correcting some weaknesses heading into their draft years. Continue reading

From Aaron Vickers, Future Considerations:

It’s nearly 3000 miles from Long Island to Portland.

But ‘El Nino’ has finally headed west.

To the Western Hockey League, that is.

After a nine game stint with the New York Islanders, Nino Niederreiter was returned to the Portland Winterhawks, bolstering the roster of a team that is already ranked third in the nation with a 12-2-0-1 record. Continue reading

FC releases preliminary list for 2011 NHL Entry Draft

From Dan Stewart:

With the QMJHL season already underway and the rest of the hockey world ready to follow suit, the Taylor vs. Tyler debate of yesteryear has been put on the back burner as their careers continue to play out.

Hall and Seguin can now give way this year’s three-way dance involving Dummondville’s Sean Couturier, Swede Adam Larsson and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of the Red Deer Rebels.

Which will be called to the stage first on draft day? Can someone outside of the ‘big three’ make noise at the top of the list?

Ladies and gentlemen, let the games begin! Continue reading
