From Sean Lafortune:

After a few days at the rink, the NHL’s Research and Development camp served as an excellent opportunity at a first hand look at quite a few of the top prospects for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft before the season gets underway.

And what a look!

Although he started off a bit slowly, I was really impressed with how Red Deer Rebels defenseman Matt Dumba turned it up towards the end of the first day. One, he really stepped up his game and delivered some strong two-way play. I thought his instincts with the puck were great and on the other end, didn’t hesitate to catch a few forwards with his head down. He reminds me a lot of P.K. Subban with a higher upside. From Aaron Vickers:

While a dozen draft eligible defensemen were battling for seven roster spots on Canada’s entry in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, two were focused elsewhere.

Cody Ceci of the Ottawa 67s and Everett Silvertips captain Ryan Murray skated alongside the likes of Ryan Johansen, Erik Gudbranson and 2011 NHL Entry Draft first overall pick Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in Canada’s National Junior Team Development Camp. Continue reading

From Dan Stewart:

With the 2011 draft in the books, the focus for many amateur scouts now turns to the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Much like them, Future Considerations is also turning its attention to 2012.

And there are names already turning heads.

The Sarnia Sting’s electric tandem are just two of the talented prospects making names for themselves a year or two before they are eligible for the NHL Entry Draft. Both Nail Yakupov and Alex Galchenyuk are set to battle each other for the 2012 throne, while another Russian – Mikhail Grigorenko – will toss his hat into the battle as well. Continue reading

From Dan Stewart:

Every year it seems like we hear about the next great hockey talent tearing it up in a rink somewhere around the world. Like clockwork, people start the hype machine rolling on some 13-year-old kid from B.C. or a 14-year-old mastering his craft in Michigan.

While some of these reports have their merit, and a gem—who ultimately goes on to become a future NHL superstar—is found, prospects often end up as just another good hockey player in a vast landscape of future NHL hopefuls. Continue reading

From Aaron Vickers:

The Canadian Hockey League’s Import Draft is two days away.

But the London Knights have already kickstarted it.

Just two days prior to the Import Draft, the Knights dealt Reid McNeill, their first round Import Draft pick, Mississauga’s 2nd round pick in the 2013 OHL Priority Draft and their own 3rd in 2013 to the Barrie Colts in exchange for the first overall selection in Wednesday’s selection process. From Aaron Vickers

He came. He saw. He conquered.

And now Nail Yakupov has been named the Canadian Hockey League’s BMO Rookie of the Year.

Yakupov was previously named the Emms Family Award as the Ontario Hockey League’s top rookie after firing 49 goals and 101 points in 65 games this season.

The native of Nizhnekamsk, RU finished fifth in OHL scoring and became just the fifth OHL rookie to break the 100-point plateau, joining David Legwand, Sheldon Keefe and then teammates Patrick Kane and Sam Gagner.

The Sarnia Sting standout also set a new franchise record for goals and points by a rookie, besting current Tampa Bay Lightning star Steven Stamkos’ 42 goals and 92 points in 2006/07. Continue reading

From Aaron Vickers:

Most prospects skating at the World Under-18 Championship were hoping to solidify their status in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

But not all.

Ryan Murray and Russian teammates Nail Yakupov and Mikhail Grigorenko were battling to become the favourite heading into the 2011/12 season. The trio, eligible for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, each put on a performance in Germany that wont soon be forgotten as scouts and hockey pundits get set to debate next year’s crop.

Murray, who captained Canada to a fourth place result, finished the tournament third in points among defensemen with 10 and second in goals with 3. It wasn’t just his offensive performance that jumped off the page, though, according to Future Considerations chief scout Dan Stewart. Continue reading
